Soloist: ARMAND DJIKOLOUM – oboe
The Enigma Variations is the work that firmly established Elgar as one of Britain’s greatest composers. A brilliant portrayal of his friends and acquaintances, some tender, some humorous, some bombastic, but always with noble affection at its core.
Armand Djikoloum is a brilliant young oboeist who makes his Worthing debut playing
Strauss’s
Oboe Concerto. The work was written towards the end of the composer’s life
during what is often described as his ‘Indian summer’. The concerto was composed at the
request of a young American G.I who visited Strauss at his home in Bavaria in the closing
days of World War II.
In the 100th anniversary of Stanford’s death, WSO performs his brilliant
Irish Rhapsody No. 1 which includes the famous Londonderry Air.
Butterworth’s
A Shropshire Lad is a much-loved orchestral rhapsody based on his song cycle setting of the poems of A. E. Houseman.
